Explained What is a
Podiatrist?
Chiropodists now tend to call themselves podiatrists. This is the
same name as foot specialists overseas and also reflects the full
extent of our scope of practice and training. However in the UK the
names ‘chiropodist’ and ‘podiatrist’ are often used interchangeably.
At the Footcare Centre ALL of
our podiatrists
have undertaken a degree-level (or equivalent) training course and
are registered with the
Health Professions Council.
All our podiatrists are also members of the
Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists.
The law has recently changed regarding the registration of
Chiropodists and Podiatrists. All of our Podiatrists were also known
as State Registered Chiropodists prior to this change.
We are also Accredited Practices of The Society of Chiropodists and
Podiatrists. For our practices to become accredited, we have reviewed
our standards to ensure that they comply with national standards and
best practice within the profession.
We applied for practice accreditation so that our clients know that
their care is being provided within a safe environment. The
accreditation scheme amongst other things also requires that:
- All reusable instruments are properly cleaned and sterilised
before they are used
- Podiatrists engage in continuing professional development to
keep their knowledge and skills up to date
- Patient confidentiality is to be respected and proper care taken
with patient records, both when used and later when they are
destroyed
- We explain treatment options, where appropriate, and cost, so
that you can make an informed choice as to the treatment you receive
- Appropriate referral pathways exist for patients who need
specialist care
- Our practices working methods are constantly reviewed.
In achieving accredited status, we not only undertook a careful
review of our practices, and asked another registered podiatrist to
check our findings, but we also agreed to our practices being
inspected by independent inspectors appointed by the Society of
Chiropodists and Podiatrists.
We therefore feel that you can be confident in the care that you
receive within our practices.
